Open
Letters to Joey
This letter was completed on August 4, 2001. A very good
friend from Taiwan offered to help and try to get it delivered
to Joey. I printed and sealed this letter in an envelope, but
decided against passing it along...I'm still not sure what I feared
most...being told that it couldn't be delivered, being told it
was delivered or actually receiving acknowledgement from Joey.
After all these years, I think it's that latter that was my greatest
fear. As strange as it may seem, having Joey acknowledge this
site's existence makes everything somehow too real. Perhaps adoration
is best kept as a secret dream...but I was inspired by an open
letter to Taiwanese songbird Meng Ting Wei to share with the world,
and perhaps, just perhaps Joey herself, my wishes for the best
and my sincerest gratitude for all her work.
Note: When this letter was written, the news reports were that
Joey and Chyi Chin had married. I'm still not clear whether these
reports were accurate or not, but this was the reason for part
of the content of the letter.

Dear Tsu Hsien,
This letter is to thank you so much for all your wonderful
work over the years. I’ve been a fan of yours since a fateful
day in 1991 when I first saw a clip from “A Chinese Ghost
Story”. Since then, I’ve been following your career
as best I can and hope that you’re happy with whatever you
are doing right now. Though we’ve never met, nor will probably
never meet in person, I feel that you are a friend in spirit.
Your movies and music have brought me years of joy and happiness.
Although I am Japanese by birth, I truly feel that I am Chinese
at heart. I have jung gwo xin, a Chinese heart and spirit that
draws me near to China and Chinese people. If you are reading
this, it means that my best friend in Taiwan, Douglas Lee has
made a dream come true. That dream is to let you know that no
matter what path choose to follow, there are fans like myself
who truly appreciate you and wish you all the best.
If you have a chance, please visit my internet website
at http://home.hawaii.rr.com/dsn . I am proud to say that to the
best of my knowledge, this is the oldest website solely dedicated
to you and your work. Many times people ask why I continue to
maintain this site since you are not currently actively doing
movies or music. My answer is always the same…this site
is dedicated to the joy and happiness you’ve brought your
fans. Just because you’re not in the limelight doesn’t
mean that you should ever be forgotten. I have webpals in China,
Singapore, Australia, France and Germany that feel the same way
I do. Truly you have touched the hearts and souls of people throughout
the world.
I hope you’re very happy with Chyi Chin and wish
you all the best in everything you do. Hopefully one day you will
return to the movies or continue your love of music. Whatever
you choose to do, you have fans all over the world who will always
appreciate and support you! Please take care and be happy.
Sincerely your fan for life from Hawaii,
Darin Nakamura

As news of Joey's retirement seems ever more final, I
feel the need to write a second open letter...

Dear Tsu Hsien,
As news of your retirement is being confirmed, I would
like to thank you once again for all the joy you've brought to
me and so many other fans throughout the world. Your movies and
music will continue a legacy of entertainment and happiness for
so many years to come.
While it will be sad not to have a new movie or CD forthcoming,
I hope you're enjoying your new life away from the spotlight.
No matter what others may write or say, please rest assured that
your true fans will continue to support and remember you for all
the great work you've done.
Please enjoy your "new" life and I wish you
double the joy and happiness you've brought to me and so many
others.
Sincerely,
Darin Nakamura
